Overview: Lysimachia nummularia is commonly known as moneywort, golden creeping jenny, wopenny grass, herb twopence, or creeping yellow loosestrife. It is a beautiful, low-growing, perennial creeping plant that one can introduce in the aquarium. It is predominantly found in eastern and northwestern parts of North America, where it grows along stream banks, roadsides, ditches, ponds and lakes. In general, it is majorly distributed in a moist environment. The beautiful, attractive heart-shaped leaves make carpet at the bottom of the tank that brings huge interest among the aquarists for creeping jenny. Although it grows mostly in moist conditions as an edging plant near bog gardens, you can also grow it inside the tank as it shows wonderful growth.

Appearance: The mature plant of Lysimachia nummularia forms a leafy carpet that is around 2-4” tall and spreads in about 2” area or more. The leaves are highly attractive, light green in colour and heart-shaped. The roots of creeping jenny develop right at the leaf nodes, where they come in contact with the substrate. When the plant reaches the water surface, flowers develop that are slightly ruffled, profuse, and bright yellow. They appear along the stems and make the tank look more attractive.

Hard/soft plant: It is a moderately hard plant.

Ideal water temperature: Lysimachia nummularia tolerates soft or hard water but flourishes in cooler water temperatures, preferably from 15 to 25 °C.

Lighting conditions: It can grow perfectly in medium to high light intensity. The plant develops bright yellow flowers under bright light and a carbon dioxide-rich environment.

Ideal pH Level: The water needs to have a pH from 6.1 to 7.8.

Do you know: Lysimachia nummularia acts as a good indicator plant for nitrate content. The plant will put on new leaves and shoots when it is well fed.
