Overview: Rotala Nanjenshan is popularly known as Green Wallichii and is widely grown as an aquarium plant among hobbyists. There are several variations of the Rotala genus, and Green Wallichii is one of them. From the green leaves to the slight reddish hues on them, everything about this plant attracts aquarists. If you are looking for some attractive and vibrant aquarium plants for your tank to give it a lush green look, Rotala Nanjenshan could be a great choice. It is a suitable midground plant that adds both texture and depth to the aquarium. It is native to Southeast Asia.

Appearance: The long, narrow, and fine elongated leaves of Rotala Nanjenshan make it very attractive. These leaves grow in opposite pairs. When the water conditions are optimum and the substrate is nutrient-rich, the leaves also develop pinkish to reddish hues, adding to the plant's beauty. The stem is thin and delicate, typical of the genus Rotala. This plant can grow up to a height of 30 cm; however, it typically remains between 15 and 25 cm. This makes it a suitable midground or background plant for the tank. When cultivated in clusters, it creates a beautiful, bushy effect in the aquarium.

Hard/Soft Plant: Due to thin and delicate leaves and stem, Green Wallichii is considered a soft plant. As a result, it requires a little more care and attention compared to many other aquatic plants. Under stable water conditions, Green Wallichii stays healthy and vigorous.

Ideal Water Temperature: Even though Rotala Nanjenshan can sustain minor fluctuations in water temperature, it is advised to keep it between 22–28°C for the best results. Under this temperature range, the leaves are more likely to bring out the reddish hues.

Lighting Conditions: Moderate to high light conditions are considered most suitable for Rotala Nanjenshan. Under bright light conditions, the plant shows vibrant growth and colors on the leaves. On the other hand, low light will result in slower growth and a less attractive appearance. Therefore, it is best to keep the plant under high lighting for the best colors and to become bushier.

Ideal pH Level: The ideal pH range for Rotala Nanjenshan is 6.0–7.5. It can tolerate slightly acidic to slightly alkaline water, but maintaining the pH within this range will help the plant thrive.

Other Requirements: Regarding other important requirements, you need to pay attention to nutrient needs and try to supply them through substrate. A rich substrate, especially one with high iron and micronutrients, is considered the most suitable. You can also supply liquid fertilizers and additional carbon dioxide to promote the healthy growth of the plant. In addition, you need to ensure that water flow is slow as the thin and delicate stem and leaves of the plant may be harmed and growth may be hindered.

Propagation: The best way to propagate Rotala Nanjenshan is through cuttings. All you need is to trim a healthy stem and replant it to the substrate. You can also allow it to float and witness its growth under suitable water conditions. The cut stem will develop roots over time and continue growing into a new plant. It's important to prune the plant regularly to encourage bushier growth and remove any old or unhealthy stems.

Do You Know: While its green coloration is the most common, under high light and good nutrient conditions, the leaves can develop beautiful reddish or pinkish tones, adding more aesthetic value to the aquarium.
