Platinum Mosaic Dumbo (Big Ear) Guppy

Overview: Platinum Mosaic Dumbo (Big Ear) Guppy is one of the best to give a colorful look to your aquarium. Guppies are popularly known as million fish and rainbow fish as they show a hint of vibrant multi-colors on their skin. Male guppies are smaller in size but brighter in color than the female guppies. They can easily adapt to any environment or ecological condition. Guppies are preferred by every aquarist to make the tank look lively and energetic. It is also one of the world’s most widely distributed tropical fish. Guppies accidentally were once used as mosquito control. They were expected to eat mosquito larvae and help to control malaria.

Distribution and Habitat: Guppies can be found in small pools and streams in large quantities than in large and deep-water bodies. Guppies are the inhabitant of The Netherlands, Antibes, Trinidad and Tobago, Jamaica, Brazil, Guyana, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, the U.S Virgin Islands, and Venezuela. Except for Antarctica, guppies have been taken to many other countries.

Temperature: The big ear Guppies can flourish well in the water temperature between 25.5 and 27.8o Celsius (78 and 82oF). Make sure you maintain the temperature within the range and avoid the sudden fluctuation to prevent the fish from coming under stress.

Water Condition: It is a least demanding and easy maintenance fish that loves to swirl in the hard water aquarium with salinity level as one tablespoon of salt per 19 L. They can survive in tropical marine tanks and tropical freshwater tanks because they can resist levels of salinity up to 150% that of normal seawater.

Breeding: The platinum mosaic Dumbo can breed easily in both freshwater and marine water, though for reproduction, they prefer water temperature around 22.2-26.1oC. The susceptibility for breeding is one of the best characteristics of these guppies; they do not require extra care for breeding.

Feeding: Feeding live foods, such as baby brine shrimp, Daphnia, micro worms, and vinegar eels, are recommended for Platinum Mosaic Dumbo (Big Ear) Guppy. The adults usually eat their weak fry, so it is always advisable to keep them away from their young ones. Egg yolk, liquid fish food, and ground flake food are some of the alternatives for adult fish.

Lifespan: Typically, the lifespan of guppies is around two years, though it varies greatly in the wild. Female guppies first produce their fry in 10-20 weeks of age and continue to reproduce until 20-34 months of age. Male guppies, on the other hand, mature in 7 weeks or less. However, because of their longer reproductive lifespan, guppies from high-predation environments seem to have a longer lifespan, which may range from 2 to 2.5 years under suitable water conditions.
