Golden Fern

Overview: With attractive foliage, Golden fern has become one of the most popular plants among terrarium owners. It is also widely used in other humid setups and paludariums. The lush and natural appearance of the plant makes it aesthetically pleasing. In addition, Golden fern has delicate foliage and a compact growth habit, which is another reason making it suitable for terrariums. When the setup has darker green plants, the contrast created with the golden-green foliage of golden fern makes it extremely beautiful. The plant is easy to maintain; therefore, it is suitable for both beginners and experts.

Appearance: The fronds of Golden fern divide delicately, spreading slightly upright. Depending upon the environmental conditions, especially light, the color of the foliage ranges from bright green to golden green. As the plant matures, it can develop a dense cluster of fronds, creating a soft, feathery appearance. Its fine-textured foliage works especially well alongside mosses and other small-leaved terrarium plants.

Light Requirements: Golden Fern prefers bright indirect to moderate light to develop healthily. Even though lower light is also tolerable, bright light will lead to compact growth. In low light conditions, the plant grows slow and the foliage loses its vibrant colors. Strong direct sunlight should be avoided because it can scorch the delicate fronds and cause the terrarium to become excessively warm.

Soil requirements: Like other terrarium plants, Golden Fern also requires a moist, well-draining, and organic-rich substrate. Waterlogging should be avoided in all cases. A combination of coco coir, fine bark, and perlite will give the best result.

Humidity: Maintain humidity around 60 to 90% to help Golden fern stay healthy. Humidity within this range will ensure that delicate fronds do not dry out and the plant continues proper growth.

Watering: Water the plant using a small amount only when the upper soil seems dry. Maintain a moist substrate but make sure it doesn’t get soggy. Avoid allowing the roots to remain in standing water for extended periods, as it will cause root rot.

Air circulation: Maintain good air circulation even if the terrarium is humid. Since wet conditions for a very long time can welcome fungal growth and mold issues, proper air circulation is a must. Avoid creating extremely humid conditions without adequate ventilation.

Trimming: Usually, golden fern does not require trimming, but removing yellow, brown, and damaged fronds will keep the plant’s appearance neat. It will also encourage new and healthy growth.

Other Requirements: Golden Fern benefits when offered a very diluted liquid fertilizer during the active growth season. However, always avoid excessive fertilization. Keep the foliage free from excessive debris and monitor for common terrarium pests such as fungus gnats and mites. With appropriate moisture, humidity, indirect lighting, and occasional maintenance, Golden Fern can create a beautiful, soft, woodland-like appearance in a terrarium.
