Sedum Angelina (Green)

Overview: The scientific name of Sedum Angelina (green) is Sedum rupestre ‘Angelina Green’, and it belongs to the Crassulaceae family. It is a hardy succulent plant that you can easily grow in your terrariums. The best part is, plants like this work really well in open terrariums and thrive beautifully. The foliage of the plant is thin, preferably needle-like, giving a textured look to it. If you want to have a refreshing green color in the terrarium, Sedum Angelina is the right choice. Native to Europe, this plant is easy to care for and can be managed by beginners. Also, it is drought-resistant. The compact and mat-forming habit makes Sedum a suitable plant for miniature landscapes like terrariums.

Appearance: This variety of Sedum is known for its fine, needle-like leaves. You can get vibrant shades of green from the plant under different conditions. Usually, when the plant starts proliferating, it forms a dense carpet with small clumps that spread horizontally. When the plant is kept under bright light, it develops green foliage that may have hues of bronze. It adds more interest to Sedum Angelina ‘green’. Under favourable conditions, the plant grows 3 to 6 inches tall and spreads easily along the substrate. It can create a stunning ground cover in terrariums.

Light requirements: Sedum Angelina ‘green’ prefers bright light conditions. When you are growing it in a terrarium, make sure it gets plenty of sunlight (indirect). If the natural light is less, offer artificial growing light that are especially made for growing succulents. In low light, the green foliage will fade, eventually making the plant look dull. Also, it will become leggy. Remember, direct sunlight is also not good for Sedum Angelina for longer hours, as it will scorch the leaves. Keeping it near the windowsill is a good idea.

Soil requirements: The best type of soil for growing Sedum Angelina in a terrarium is a fast-draining, airy mix. Such soil works best for all types of succulents. Add a thin layer of pebbles, followed by a soil mix. It will allow drainage of water and keep the soil suitably wet for the succulents. Make sure to avoid water stagnation and soggy conditions, as it will increase the chances of root rot.

Humidity: Sedum Angelina ‘green’ prefers low humidity conditions. It is the best for open terrariums as well, making it one of the best plants to grow in a terrarium. If you are growing it in a closed terrarium where the humidity is high, the chances of fungal growth will be high. So, try to maintain moderate humidity in the room and proper air exchange for the plants to remain healthy.

Watering: Sedum Angelina is a succulent; therefore, it stores water in its fleshy leaves. It means the plant already has a sufficient supply of water. So, minimal watering is required. Water only when you feel the soil is completely dry. Overwatering will kill the plant.

Air circulation: Maintain a proper air flow and keep the terrarium in well-ventilated areas.

Trimming: Under favourable conditions, Sedum Angelina ‘green’ grows profusely and spreads horizontally. Therefore, you may need to trim the overgrown stems. It will give the plant a more compact look and bushier growth.

Other requirements: Sedum Angelina is an easy terrarium plant. It doesn’t require frequent fertilization. You may feed it once with diluted succulent fertilizer in the growing seasons– spring and summer. It has a resilient nature and shows lush green color under optimal conditions.
