Cryptocoryne Lucens

Overview: Cryptocoryne lucens is a popular aquatic plant, appreciated by aquarists for its characteristics that make it suitable for an aquarium. It is hardy, has compact growth, and requires little maintenance; thus, suitable for beginners as well. Cryptocoryne lucens is native to Sri Lanka, where it can be found growing along the wetlands and riverbanks. Typically, it thrives in tropical freshwater environment where it can grow in both conditions– fully submerged or partially submerged. The plant is highly adaptable and can withstand minor fluctuations in water parameters. It can be used for creating a natural aquascape. The growth rate is relatively low, and it is a low-growing plant as well.

Appearance: Cryptocoryne lucens has a grassy appearance. The ribbon-like leaves form a clump like structure, giving it an unusual and aesthetic look. It can be used as a foreground or midground plant in a low-tech setup. Due to a slow growth rate, Cryptocoryne lucens takes time to spread. This steady and slow growth will help to maintain the plant easily without trimming frequently. The leaves are narrow and sword-like with wavy edges. They grow together and form dense clumps. The plant usually attains around 8 to 10 cm height and spreads via runners. It can be used to create a lush green carpet.

Hard/Soft Plant: Cryptocoryne lucens is a very hardy plant and easily adapts to a wide range of water conditions. Those preferring low-maintenance tanks can definitely go for this plant.

Ideal water temperature: Even though it can tolerate slight fluctuations, try to maintain the temperature between 23 and 27 degrees Celsius.

Lighting Conditions: The plant prefers low to medium lighting. Too much light may lead to an algae bloom and nutrient imbalance. It is better to maintain low light in which is grows slow but remain healthy.

Ideal pH Level: Maintain pH between 6 and 7.5. While it can adapt to slight variations, keeping pH between the range will give the best results.

Other Requirements: Make sure that you are growing Cryptocoryne lucens in a nutrient-rich substrate. It doesn’t require additional carbon dioxide. You may experience the melting of leaves in the initial stage. Do not panic or remove the plant, as ‘crypt melting’ is a common condition with all the crypts. They take time to adjust to the new water condition and once adjusted, proliferates.

Propagation: Cryptocoryne lucens propagates through underground runners. You can observe many little plants growing around the mother plant. Once they get leaves, you can separate them and grow them individually.

Do You Know: Often, people confuse Cryptocoryne lucens with Cryptocoryne parva due to their small size. What differentiates them is that Lucens has longer and narrower leaves. It is suitable for carpeting the tank under low light conditions.
