Cyperus papyrus

Overview: Cyperus papyrus is a beautiful, tall aquatic plant which is more popular as Papyrus. The use of this plant for making paper has given it popularity around the world. One can find this tall plant growing in marshy and tropical environment; however, you can also grow it in large aquariums to give it a unique look. Hobbyists also grow it in paludariums and ripariums. When you grow it in aquariums, this tall plant will outgrow the tank’s water, and it will grow as an emergent plant (above water). While it is not a true submerged aquatic plant, one can grow it with the roots in water and stems above.

Appearance: Cyperus papyrus is a tall aquatic plant that has a triangular stem. There is a cluster of umbrella-like bracts that are modified leaves. These bracts are in clusters and give the plant a distinctive tuft appearance. Growing in an aquarium will transform the entire look of the aquascape. The roots and lower section of the stem will stay submerged; however, the foliage will stay above the water surface and may outgrow the tank. Cyperus papyrus may grow as tall as 4 to 6 feet when it is given ideal conditions. Aquarists having open-top tanks or aquatic terrariums can use Cyperus papyrus in their setup.

Hard/Soft Plant: Cyperus papyrus is a hardy plant. Compared to other submerged aquatic plants, it is relatively robust and easily adaptable when suitable water conditions, along with light and moisture, are provided to it.

Ideal water temperature: Warm and tropical temperatures are best suited for Cyperus papyrus to grow. When the temperature is between 20°C to 28°C, it works perfectly well for its growth and development. Protecting from extreme cold and fluctuations in temperature will also help in its growth.

Lighting Conditions: Cyperus papyrus requires moderate to high light to show the best results. When strong light is provided, the plant shows healthy, robust, and vigorous growth. To get lush foliage, keep the aquarium near natural sunlight or provide full-spectrum aquarium lights to it. Giving around 8 to 10 hours of light everyday will promote Cyperus papyrus’s growth.

Ideal pH Level: The ideal pH range for Cyperus papyrus is between 6 to 7.5. It is relatively tolerant but thrives best in stable pH conditions.

Other Requirements: Ensure to have a nutrient rich substrate like gravel or aquatic soil, or add root tab fertilizers for the best result. While the roots will remain submerged in water, the foliage should be emergent. Being a tropical plant, Cyperus papyrus prefers good humidity as it promotes better growth. This plant is best suited for large tanks, so make sure your aquarium is big enough with vertical room and have an open lid.

Propagation: Propagation of Cyperus papyrus happens through division of clumps. Here, you need to separate mature plant clusters and replant them in new locations. You can also propagate it through top cuttings, wherein the top tuft or umbrella like bracts is cut and placed upside down in water. New shoots emerge over time from the center.

Do You Know: Cyperus papyrus has the tendency to absorb excess nutrients from water. It makes it a useful plant to control algae bloom and thus, improve water quality. It is not toxic to fish and other aquatic creatures; thus, suitable for all types of aquariums.
