Assassin Snail

Overview: Assassin Snail is one of the most beneficial additions for freshwater planted aquariums. The scientific name of Assassin Snail is Clea helena, and it is native to Southeast Asia. From its unique appearance to its ability to work as a cleanup crew, this snail can increase the tank’s aesthetic while making it clean. The best part about adding Assassin Snails is that they breed slowly compared to other hitchhiker snails; thus, easy to manage. Also, they are calm and peaceful towards fish, shrimp, and plants. It makes Assassin Snails a perfect addition for both beginners as well as experienced aquarists.

Appearance: Assassin Snails look extremely beautiful due to the presence of golden-yellow and dark brown or black spiral bands over their shell. The conical shell with the distinctive pattern makes them the focal point in the aquarium. Usually, the shell grows only around 2 to 3 cm in length. However, the muscular foot helps the snail slide easily across the substrate, rocks, and driftwood. If you want to add some visual appeal to the tank, adding an Assassin snail will be the right decision.

Natural Habitat: In nature, you can find Assassin snails alongside rivers, streams, and lakes or ponds in South Asian countries like Thailand, Malaysia, or Indonesia. They can be found lurking around muddy substrate or soft sand. Usually, they bury themselves into the sand to wait for their prey. Due to greater adaptability, Assassin snails can be found thriving in a wide range of freshwater aquarium conditions.

Advantages: The most beneficial character of Assassin snails is their acting as a biological pest control agent inside the aquarium. Apart from cleaning up algae, they also hunt other nuisances that enter the tank, such as bladder snails, pond snails, ramshorn snails, and more such hitchhikers. In this way, they help in creating a balanced ecosystem in the aquarium without using any pesticide.

Besides, they also clean up the tank by consuming leftover fish food, decaying organic matter, and other dead organisms. The biggest advantage is that they do not feed on healthy aquatic plants; therefore, considered completely plant-safe and ideal for aquascaped or planted tanks.

Water Parameters: Assassin snails are hardy and adapt easily to varying water parameters. However, when the parameters are stable, they thrive.

• Temperature: 22–28°C (72–82°F)
• pH: 6.5–8.0
• Hardness: Moderate to hard water (5–20 dGH)

When it is about snails, maintain proper calcium levels in the water is also essential, as it helps to promote healthy shell growth.

Diet: Assassin snails feed on other snails along with dead and decomposing materials and leftover food particles. However, this happens only when the tank is not clean and infested. If the tank is already well-maintained, add the following to their diet-

• Protein-rich wafer foods
• Protein-rich sinking foods
• Fish meal-based pellets
• Shrimp-based pellets

Occasionally adding a protein supplement will help Assassin snails stay healthy and thriving.

Compatibility: Assassin snails are peaceful and compatible with most community fish and shrimp. They will live peacefully with fish like tetras, guppies, gouramis, shrimps, corydoras, etc. Make sure there is no other pet snail that is very small or weak, as it may become Assassin’s target; however, Nerite and Mystery snails can be added due to their large size.

Why choose Assassin Snail? The Assassin Snail is an excellent addition to planted and community aquariums where pest snail control is needed. Its attractive appearance, peaceful temperament, and slow breeding habits make it far superior to chemical treatments for managing nuisance snail populations. Whether you're maintaining a nature aquarium, aquascape, or community tank, the Assassin Snail offers a safe, natural, and effective way to keep your aquarium healthy while adding an interesting and beneficial inhabitant to your underwater ecosystem.
