Philodendron Brasil Plant

Overview: Philodendron Brasil is a beautiful trailing plant that can be grown successfully in a terrarium. It is a fast-growing plant that is easy to care for and maintain. Philodendron Brasil is also popular with the Philodendron heartleaf name, and it belongs to the Araceae family. It is native to Central America and the Caribbean. It can be grown in open terrariums without much effort. The lush green it brings to the space makes it an ideal plant for homes and offices. The trailing habit makes it the best plant to put in hanging terrariums.

Appearance: The leaves are of a heart shape with striking variegation. From the deep green edges to the central line stripe, everything brings more attractiveness to Philodendron Brasil. The trailing vines look astounding, and the leaves growing on them bring more charm. Under the right conditions, it can grow several feet in length. One can easily add a tropical, lush feel to the indoor space by adding Philodendron Brasil in their terrariums.

Light requirements: Philodendron Brasil prefers bright indirect light to attain the best growth and attractive variegation. While it can tolerate low light as well, you may end up getting faded variegation and slower growth. Make sure to avoid direct sunlight as it will make the leaves yellow, and eventually, they will scorch.

Soil Requirements: The pot or terrarium must have a well-draining, loose, and airy soil mix. It can have peat moss or coco coir, perlite or pumice, orchid bark, activated charcoal, etc. Compact or soggy soil will retain too much moisture and end up rotting the roots, so try to avoid it.

Humidity: There should be moderate humidity in the environment (60 to 70%) where you are planning to keep the terrarium with Philodendron Brasil. This plant loves humid conditions but can tolerate average indoor humidity as well. Also, if the humidity is too high but the ventilation is poor, the chances of leaf rot or fungus increase. So, it is important to keep Philodendron Brasil in an open, ventilated, and airy room with good humidity.

Watering: You need to water only when the top 1-2 inches of soil seem dry. In terrariums, there should be minimal watering due to the low evaporation rate. Overwatering will welcome root rot, so water accordingly. If the leaves seem yellow and wilted, it signals overwatering.

Air circulation: Good airflow is an important aspect in a terrarium. For Philodendron Brasil, make sure there is good ventilation, even if you have grown it in a closed setup. You can also install small fans for good airflow. However, if the terrarium is open, normal room airflow will be sufficient,

Trimming: While Philodendron Brasil is a vine plant with a trailing habit, you can trim it for bushy and compact growth. Branching stimulates when you cut the long vines just above the nodes. To make the plant appear healthy, remove the yellow and damaged leaves.

Other Requirements: Putting a small amount of balanced liquid fertilizers in the growing season will help Philodendron Brasil grow abundantly. You also need to put something to support the growing vines. If you have pets at home, prevent them from chewing on the leaves of Philodendron Brasil, as they could be toxic due to the presence of calcium oxalate crystals.
