Overview: It is a wonderful aquarium plant that can be used as a background plant to intensify the beauty of the tank. Commonly known as giant Sagittaria, giant arrowhead, and broadleaf Sagittaria, this plant is easy to maintain and grow in an aquarium. It comes from the family Alismataceae and is native to North America. The fast-growing habit and ability to grow in fully immersed conditions make it one of the best plants to grow in the aquarium. Although it’s an amazing background plant, you can place in a variety of locations to give a natural sea-like look to the tank.
Appearance: As per the name, Sagittaria sp. giant has wide, blade grass-like leaves. The plant is green in color and looks beautiful in an aquarium. It is a stem less, rhizomatous aquatic plant. The young ribbon-like leaves grow submerged in water while the leaves of the older plants emerge out of the water. You can grow it either singly as a mid-ground plant or in bunches at the back. The wide leaves will give a variance of leaf styles within the aquarium. If you have a small size aquarium, the plant may emerge out of the water owing to its amphibious nature. It is advised to trim out the dead tips of the leaves to prevent the decay of the entire plant. The plant doesn’t attain a height of more than 10 to 15 cm.
Hard/ soft plant: It is a soft-hard plant that can thrive well under diverse water conditions.
Ideal water temperature: It can grow well under diverse conditions, but the temperature between the ranges of 18 to 28 degrees will be suitable.
Lighting conditions: Sagittaria sp. giant has low light requirements. Providing a moderate amount of light between the range of 2 to 3 watts per gallon will suffice the need. You can use full-spectrum bulbs for the purpose. Regular addition of carbon dioxide, fertilizers rich in iron, and trace elements will help in flourishing the growth and development of Sagittaria sp. giant. You will experience the plant booming when the right dose of fertilizers is supplied.
Ideal pH level: pH ranging between 6.5 to 7.5 is perfect for the Sagittaria sp. giant.
Do you know: The plant reproduces through seeds or by runners set out from the mother plant. When the plant develops a root system and immature leaves, you can separate it from the mother plant to place it at another location.
