Euphorbia Tithymaloides

Overview: Also popular as Devil’s Backbone and Zig-Zag Plant, Euphorbia tithymaloides is one of the terrariums plants that you can introduce in your setup. It is a succulent shrub known for its characteristic zig-zag stem and attractive foliage. Euphorbia tithymaloides is native to Central America and hails from the Euphorbiaceae family. It has an upright growth habit and a unique architectural shape, making it the focal point of the terrariums. One can add it in the terrarium and bring a structural contrast to the setup. The best part about adding Euphorbia tithymaloides is that it loves warm and humid environment, which is the natural environmental condition inside a terrarium. Secondly, it is easy to maintain and performs well in partially covered terrariums.

Appearance: The characteristic feature of Euphorbia tithymaloides, which appears like a miniature ladder, brings so much appeal to this plant. The angular stem pattern is unique and unusual. The stems are green, and the thick leaves grow alternately in a zigzag pattern. Depending upon the variety, the leaves could be glossy and variegated. You may also find tiny bracts at the tip of the leaves in the shades of red and pink that sometimes look like a flower. It will add some colors to the terrarium, too. Euphorbia tithymaloides shows an upright growth habit and grows around 10 inches tall.

Light requirements: Euphorbia tithymaloides needs bright indirect light to maintain proper health and growth. Such light will only help the plant to maintain its compact zig-zag structure. Make sure you place the terrarium at a place where the plant receives enough indirect filtered sunlight for at least 6-7 hours. Direct sun may scorch the leaves, and low light will make the plant leggy.

Soil requirements: the best type of soil for Euphorbia tithymaloides is a well-draining mix that can have cocopeat, coarse sand, perlite, etc., in the right proportion. It will make sure there is enough aeration and moisture retention. Heavy and compact soil will lead to water logging, which will rot the roots.

Humidity: Euphorbia tithymaloides prefer moderate humidity levels, which are usually found in terrariums. Try to maintain it around 70% because high humidity will cause mold or root rot.

Watering: Usually, you don’t need to water the terrarium plants frequently because the closed setup of the terrarium does not let water evaporate easily. So, water sparingly and only when you feel the upper layer is dry. Overwatering will damage the plant. A light misting once every 7–10 days is usually sufficient. If the leaves seem shrivelled, it’s a sign that the plant needs water.

Air circulation: Proper air flow will prevent fungal growth.

Trimming: Maintain the proper shape of the plant by trimming it occasionally. Make sure you remove damaged and leggy stem. It will also encourage branching and healthier growth.

Other requirements: While not necessary, you may add succulent fertilizer once a month or during active growing seasons. Avoid overfertilization.

Note: Euphorbia tithymaloides excretes milky sap, which is toxic and may cause skin irritation. So always wear gloves while trimming, pruning, or handling the plant.
