Sansevieria Futura Robusta

Overview: Sansevieria trifasciata is a popular indoor plant, commonly known as the Snake plant. It is a compact and slow-growing plant with thick upright leaves. The silver green variegation in the leaves give it a unique snake-like appearance. Sansevieria trifasciata is native to West Africa and belongs to the Asparagaceae family. The sturdy and architectural look that the snake plant gives makes it a popular one for terrarium cultivation. It adds height and structure to the setup, making it more attractive. The best part is that this variety of snake plant stays small, unlike the varieties you find growing along the roadside. If you require some bold and vertical accents in the terrarium, Sansevieria trifasciata is the right choice. At the same time, it is a low demanding plant, best for indoor plantation.

Appearance: Sansevieria trifasciata has characteristic erect leaves that are short and broad. They are arranged in a tight rosette. The silvery-green colors on the leaves and the dark green margins– all create a stunning contrast, adding beauty to the overall texture to the leaves. The leaves are thick and flashy ad store moisture. Usually, under the right conditions, Sansevieria trifasciata may attain up to 12 to 14 inches in height.

Light requirements: Sansevieria trifasciata prefers bright and indirect light to attain the best coloration. Even though the plant can tolerate low light, but keeping it for an extended time will dull the color and slow down the growth. Direct light will not only heat the enclosed setup of the terrarium but also scorch the leaves as well. You may also add artificial grow lights to maintain healthy and upright foliage.

Soil requirements: Sansevieria trifasciata loves fast-draining soil same like other succulents. The soil mix can have cocopeat, coarse sand, and perlite that will not retain moisture. This plant is susceptible to root rot; therefore, airy soil is a must to keep the roots healthy and the plant strong.

Humidity: Sansevieria trifasciata loves high humidity conditions, making it suitable for terrarium culture. Ideal humidity is around 40–60%. Overly humid condition may affect the plant negatively and cause fungal issues and leaf spotting. Make sure there is good ventilation in the terrarium.

Watering: Water only when the soil is dry. There should be a sufficient gap between watering, usually 2-3 weeks. Just like over humid conditions, overwatering is also hazardous to the plant. It will lead to root rot. Less is always better for Sansevieria trifasciata.

Air circulation: Maintain proper airflow inside the terrarium to prevent fungal growth. If it’s a closed terrarium, open the lid occasionally and let the fresh air flow. This also prevents excess moisture buildup.

Trimming: Trim or remove the damaged and drooping leaves. You may also remove the old leaves, as it will make the plant look neat and encourage compact growth.

Other requirements: There is no need to add fertilizers for Sansevieria trifasciata; however, adding diluted succulent fertilizer once every 2 months in the growing season will promote growth and health. Make sure you do not over-fertilize, as it will put the plant under stress.

Note: Sansevieria trifasciata is mildly toxic if ingested. Keep them out of reach of kids and pets and handle with care during repotting or trimming.
