Dry Sphagnum Moss

Dried Sphagnum Moss is a lightweight moss material that is used as a plant-friendly substrate in terrariums. It acts as a natural moisture regulator and drainage layer support in a terrarium setup.

Advantages

• Using sphagnum moss helps maintain stable humidity levels inside semi-closed and closed terrariums.
• Certain compounds in terrariums act as natural antibiotics; thus, they help in reducing bacterial growth. It reduces the chances of root rot and thus, is good for delicate plants.
• The airy structure of dried sphagnum moss creates air pockets that improve oxygen availability to plant roots.
• It prevents soil from getting compacted, thus keeping it fluffy and breathable.
• The fibrous texture of dried sphagnum moss helps create natural forest aesthetics inside terrariums.

How to Use

Prepare dried sphagnum moss for terrariums in the following steps-

1. Rehydrate- Take a bowl and fill two-thirds of it with clean water. Place the moss inside the water for at least 15 minutes.
2. Rinse- Rinse the moss to eliminate dust and debris and clean it.
3. Remove- Once the moss is clean, squeeze it gently so that excess water removes. Keep it moist but not dripping.

Now, the dried sphagnum moss is ready to use.

Where to Use

Different ways of using dried sphagnum moss are-

• As a drainage barrier layer, it keeps it between the drainage layer and soil. The layering can be done in the following manner: stones/gravel- activated charcoal- sphagnum moss- terrarium soil mix- plants and decorations. 1-2 cm of barrier layer of dry moss is enough.
• As soil component mix dried sphagnum moss into the substrate. With 40% potting soil and 30% cocopeat, 20 to 30% sphagnum moss can be added. It will improve moisture balance and create better aeration.
• As top dressing, small pieces of dry sphagnum moss can be placed on the soil surface. A thin decorative covering will suffice. It will create a natural look and also help protect the roots in different ways.
• As plant roots wrap for certain terrarium plants such as ferns, orchids, etc.

How to Maintain

• Do not overwater, as it may cause mold and lead to root rot.
• Ensure light airflow to allow fresh air exchange.
• If mold appears, remove it quickly, as it will harm the plant.

Mistakes to Avoid

• Do not use too much moss, as it will trap excessive moisture and suffocate roots.
• Dry moss repels water, so make sure to rehydrate it before adding it to the substrate.
• Low-quality moss breaks down faster and may contain a lot of debris, so always buy from a reliable source.

Lifespan

Depending upon microbial activity, maintenance, and humidity conditions, dried sphagnum moss may last from 6 months to 2 years. If the moss looks dark and slimy after months of use, replace it.
