Ficus pumila(creeping fig)

Overview: Giving an edge to the terrarium, Ficus pumila could be a great addition to your terrarium. It is also commonly called Creeping Fig and is native to East Asia. It is a fast-growing clinging vine with delicate foliage. However, the strong climbing ability of this creeping plant helps it trail along the space and gives an astonishing look to the entire setup. It features lush, carpet-forming growth and can be attached to glass, wood, or any other decorative background. Adding it to the terrarium allows for creating an attractive green wall like look inside an enclosed environment.

Appearance: Ficus pumila features small leaves that are heart-shaped, developing not more than 1-3 inches. This is the characteristic feature of creeping fig, making it appear eye-catching. The stems have a trailing habit, and they look for surfaces to cling to. There are aerial roots that help in creeping or trailing through the surface. In addition, Ficus pumila also features a dense mat-forming growth habit, thanks to its creeping nature. If you want to create a carpet look in the terrarium, this could be a good option. When the leaves mature, they often become larger and thicker; however, this feature is rare in terrariums and is seen when Ficus pumila is growth on land.

Light Requirements: Ficus pumila prefers bright indirect light; however, it can easily tolerate moderate light as well. In moderate light conditions, it grows slowly. You need to avoid strong direct sunlight as it may scorch the delicate foliage of Ficus pumila. Terrariums also get overheated when placed under direct sunlight. Make sure the setup attains consistent light, as it will encourage its compact and healthy growth.

Soil requirements: Always grow terrarium plants in a well-draining and moisture-retentive substrate. The ideal mixture is coco coir or peat-based, which is blended with perlite. Keep the soil’s pH between 6 and 7 for the best result. Adding a drainage layer will prevent common problems like root rot.

Humidity: The ideal humidity for Ficus pumila when grown in a terrarium is between 60 and 90%. This range suits closed and semi-closed terrariums perfectly. Within this range, you can expect Ficus pumila to have lush foliage and healthy aerial roots. In open terrariums, occasional misting becomes necessary.

Watering: Substrate should be evenly moist but not soggy. Make sure you water the plant only when the top layer is slightly dry. Overwatering or standing water will rot the roots. If you have a closed or semi-closed terrarium, watering needs become minimal.

Air circulation: Adequate air flow will prevent mold and fungal issues inside the terrariums. If you have a closed terrarium, open the lid briefly once a week to refresh the air. Avoid overly wet conditions to support healthy growth.

Trimming: Since Ficus pumila features a creeping habit, you need to prune regularly to control speed. Pinching stems will also encourage fuller growth. Get rid of yellow and overcrowded growth for better development and overall look.

Other Requirements: You may add diluted liquid fertilizer in the growing season and look pout for pests like spider mites that often come up in terrariums (semi-closed and open). With proper care and maintenance, Ficus pumila can add depth, texture, and vibrant greenery to the display.
