Syngonium Wendlandii

Overview: Syngonium Wendlandii is native to Central America and belongs to the Araceae family. One can easily find Syngonium growing in warm and humid environmental conditions in the wild. The striking foliage of the plant is something that makes it unique and suitable for indoor and terrarium setups. The leaves are textured and velvety in touch with dark green foliage and a distinctive white midrib. Usually, Syngonium Wendlandii grows compactly and gracefully and adapts to indoor settings. It is less demanding and perfect for beginners. Adding a calm and sophisticated look to the space, this plant could be a great addition to your terrarium. Also, it is low-maintenance, with dramatic foliage, suitable for low-maintenance setups.

Appearance: It is the characteristic appearance of Syngonium Wendlandii that makes it unique and attractive. The leaves are arrow-shaped with velvety texture, giving them a premium look. You can find the foliage to be in varying shades of green, typically dark green or emerald. The bold silver white stripe running along the center vein brings more charm and uniqueness to the plant. When grown as an indoor plant, the plant will reach around 8 to 10 inches in height with a trailing habit. You may need a little support for the plant to trail well. The growth rate is moderate and thus suitable for terrarium setups.

Light Requirements: Provide bright but indirect light to Syngonium Wendlandii plant. When the plant gets perfect light conditions, it develops perfect contrats between dark green leaves and silvery white midrib. Make sure to avoid direct sunlight as it will scorch the delicate foliage. Syngonium Wendlandii can tolerate low light conditions; however, the growth will get slow and the leaves may fade.

Soil Requirements: Airy pot mix which is well-draining and have moisture retention capacity, is the most ideal for terrarium plants, including Syngonium Wendlandii. It won’t make the soil soggy and thus prevent a lot of conditions that rot the roots. Adding a mix of coco peat, perlite, and a small amount of bark or compost will also work well. It will make sure that proper aeration is maintained and healthy roots develop.

Humidity: Syngonium Wendlandii is a tropical plant and prefers moderate to light humid conditions. Keeping humidity between 60 to 75% is suitable for the plant’s growth and development. If the humidity is very low, you may see the leaves' edges curling or getting brown. Therefore, if the environment is dry, misting around the plant will help. You may also use a humidifier to maintain humid conditions.

Watering: Watering the plant when the topsoil feels dry is the best way to keep the plant healthy. Make sure the soil remains evenly moist. Do no overwater the plant as it may lead to water logging and eventually root rot. Underwatering will cause the leaves to drop and fade in color.

Air Circulation: Gentle air circulation will prevent fungal and mold issues at bay and keep the plant healthy. Try not to keep the terrarium in places where sudden temperature drift takes place.

Trimming: In order to maintain bushier and compact growth, prune the plant after regular intervals. Trim off the leggy stems and remove all the damaged and yellow leaves. It will not only make the plant look neat, but also maintain its aesthetic as well.

Other Requirements: There is no need to add extra fertilizers to the soil for Syngonium Wendlandii. You can just add a diluted liquid fertilizer once in a while to replenish the lost nutrients from the soil.
