Hemigraphis repanda (Green)

Overview: Hemigraphis repanda (Green) is popularly known as Green Hemigraphis and belongs to the Acanthaceae family. It is native to tropical regions of Asia and is loved by terrarium hobbyists for the rich green, textured leaves. Besides, the compact growth habit of the plant also makes it ideal for closed terrarium setups. Sophisticated crinkling and glossiness on the foliage is something that makes the plant unique and attractive. At the same time, the tropical appearance gives it an astounding look. It prefers warm and humid conditions that are natural to the terrariums.

Appearance: Hemigraphis repanda (Green) is a low-growing plant with a natural tendency to spread horizontally. Adding it to a terrarium or in indoor plant arrangements is a great choice. The best part is, it loves high humid conditions that are automatically gets created inside terrariums. The leaves are oval to slightly elongated, having a characteristic quilted texture. You may see varying shades of dark green with a subtle sheen on the leaves, depending upon the conditions of the terrarium. Usually, the leaves grow dense on trails creeping stem, creating a carpet-like look. Also, the height of the plant does not go beyond 8 inches. So, if you want to create a calming green effect in the terrarium and form a mat-like look, this will be a great option.

Light requirements: Hemigraphis repanda (Green) loves bright indirect light. It is one of the ways to ensure the foliage stays green and shiny and gets the characteristic quilted texture. Make sure there is no direct light on the plant, as it will burn the leaves and fade them. This plant is tolerable to low light conditions or insufficient light, but not for very long. In such conditions, the growth will slow down. When you grow Hemigraphis repanda (Green) in a terrarium, make sure it gets consistent, filtered light at moderate levels.

Soil requirements: Grow Hemigraphis repanda (Green) in a terrarium with well-drained, moisture retentive soil mix. Having coco coir, peat moss and perlite will provide good aeration to the soil and prevent waterlogging. Soggy soil will rot the roots, and eventually the plant will die.

Humidity: Hemigraphis repanda (Green) requires high humidity to thrive. Make sure the humidity is between 70 to 80% because less than this range will cause leaves to fade and turn brown, losing their texture. If you have a closed terrarium setup, it will develop humidity; however, for open terrarium settings, regular misting is essential. You can use a humidifier in such cases.

Watering: Occasionally water the plant; however, do not overwater as it will make the soil too moist and lead to root rot. At the same time, make sure the soil doesn’t dry completely, as it will cause wilting. There should be proper water drainage for a healthy root system.

Air circulation: Gentle air circulation is recommended for Hemigraphis repanda (Green) when grown in a terrarium. It will prevent the growth of fungus and mould.

Trimming: Trim the plants regularly to maintain their bushy appearance. Remove the leggy stems and damaged or yellow leaves. It will allow the plant to grow fresh leaves and keep looking dense and healthy.

Other Requirements: You can add diluted liquid fertiliser to Hemigraphis repanda (Green) once a month. This plant does not require heavy fertilization as it only damages the roots and affects the overall plant’s health.
